A case of adult croup.

چکیده
Croup, or laryngotracheobronchitis, is recognized as a common, generally benign illness in children. It is characterized by a barking cough, stridor, and fever, often preceded by an upper respiratory infection. The hallmark of croup is edema of the subglottic tissues, resulting in varying degrees of airway obstruction. In most pediatric patients, croup is a self-limited condition that may be safely managed in an outpatient setting. By contrast, adult croup is a rarely encountered condition that represents a more significant threat to respiratory function. First described by Deeb and Einhorn in 1990, adult croup syndrome consists of acute upper airway obstruction secondary to subglottic inflammation [1]. Compared to children, the clinical course in adult patients is more severe, and many patients will require active airway management, assisted ventilation, and ICU level care.
